Abbott signs bill raising smoking age to 21

AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) Starting this fall you will have to be 21-years-old to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other tobacco products.

Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 21 into law on Friday, the new law will go into effect on September 1.

There is an exception, those serving in the United States Military Forces or State Military Forces will still be able to purchase tobacco products with a valid military ID.

If you were born on or before August 21, 2001, the prohibition on the purchase of those products does not apply.

Texas now joins 15 other states that have raised the smoking age to 21, according to Texas 21 coalition.
