SWEETWATER, Texas (AP) As much as 8 inches of snow has accumulated in parts of West Texas as a winter storm swirled over the area, but in Central Texas temperatures remained above freezing, although a brisk wind made it feel colder.
The snow accumulation late Thursday prompted state highway officials to close Texas Route 70 about 8 miles south of Sweetwater.
The heaviest snowfall zone was an area bounded by San Angelo, Abilene and Sweetwater, which were under a winter storm advisory until Friday morning.
Central Texas was under a wind advisory until noon Friday.
Temperatures along the I-35 corridor will rise only into the upper 40s this afternoon and northwest winds gusting as high as 30 miles per hour will make for lower wind chill readings.
The sky should clear overnight as temperatures drop into the upper 30s.
Saturday should be sunny with highs in the upper 50s.
