“This is a project that will connect a couple of neighborhoods and provide access out of those neighborhoods to loop 121,” Belton, spokesman Paul Romer said.

The $169,000 contract was awarded to Turley Associates.

For the last five years, the area has boomed, meaning more houses and more traffic.

"The Bell County Justice Center has some traffic concerns and as that neighborhood continues to grow those concerns continue to grow,” Romer said.

Traffic from the neighborhood, the Bell County Justice Center, jail and Bell County Expo Center all has to funnel in and out on Huey Avenue.

The city has planned to expand Southwest Parkway to give people another way out.

“We've hired an engineer to design it and that could take up to 12 months,” Romer said.

Once the design is complete, the council will decide whether to approve it.

Other projects in the works are expanding Loop 121 from two to four lanes and adding hike and bike trails along Nolan Creek.

No dates have been set for the projects.
