BELTON, Texas (KWTX) It's Teacher Appreciation Week and local schools are celebrating educators with free lunches, goodie bags and gifts.

One Belton Independent School District special education teacher has received appreciation on another level.

Known to the students as “Mr. O”, Doug O’Loughlin was named the Belton ISD's Special Education Teacher of the year.

He has worked at Tarver Elementary School for eight years.

He’s described by his peers as selfless and incredible.

Serving as an ear to the students in the district who need extra attention, while also being a voice for them when they can’t express their own.

"I love it. Every day is different, but I love what I do. I love the school and the people I work with and that it really is a team concept." O'Loughlin says.

O’Loughlin says it’s wonderful to be recognized and appreciated this week, but he feels rewarded every day he spends at school.
