AUSTWELL, Texas (AP) A boardwalk at a Southeast Texas wildlife refuge that was damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 has reopened.
The Victoria Advocate reports that the boardwalk in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge reopened this month. It connects two observation towers to where the Big Tree Trail meets San Antonio Bay.
Laura Bonneau, manager of visitors' services for the refuge, says Harvey damaged a portion of a boardwalk and refuge staff closed another portion before that because they thought it needed handrails.
She says the boardwalk gives visitors "a neat opportunity to see a habitat that you don't necessarily get to explore otherwise."
The boardwalk now has handrails in addition to being wide enough that a visitor can navigate it while carrying a kayak.
