CAMERON, Texas (KWTX) The Salem-Elm Ridge WSC and CoBank have partnered to give the Cameron and Buckholts volunteer fire departments $7,000 and Cameron’s Blessings from God Food Pantry $8,000.

“Volunteer fire departments in Central Texas are critical for the safety of our people and community infrastructure,” Robert Jekel, general manager of Salem-Elm Ridge WSC, said.

A spokesperson for CoBank says its local customers help the bank decide which nonprofits will be assisted.

This year the bank estimates it will donate $4 million to groups nationwide.

Blessings from God is one several food pantries helped every year during the Food For Families drive.

Over the past 30 years Food For Families has grown into the largest one-day food drive in the state.

This year’s drive on Nov. 22 encompasses nine counties with a total of 18 televised collection sites.

Last year, Central Texans donated more than 2.2 million pounds of food.

Since the drive started, Food For Families has collected nearly 29 million pounds of food for area food pantries.
