Killeen: Central Texans start 2020 at the gym

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Every New Year’s, thousands of Americans make resolutions to join the gym and get back in shape. Today was no different as many Central Texans went to planet fitness in Killeen for their first big workout of the year.

“Within the month of January, we can easily average over 100 to 150 new members,” said Antonio Leon, regional director for Excel Fitness, the company that owns Planet Fitness.

Many who join are looking to start healthy habits in 2020, not just working out.

“When you get older, it’s just harder to maintain your health,” said Belinda Berry.

“I don’t want to get to that point where my health is at risk because of my diet and exercise.”

But how do you maintain your health? With so many diets, equipment and different memberships, it can be overwhelming, especially when people don’t see fast results.

Some experienced gym members like Erika Allison simply advise new gym members to go at their own pace.

“Honestly, you just have to be really dedicated to coming,” she said.

“The more work you put in, the more work you’re going to get out of it.”

Another regular member, Glenda Williams, is a senior who’s been attending for over a year.

“It just keeps me motivated,” she said.

“It keeps me limber and agile. I feel good about myself at the end of every workout.”

Feeling good by starting the new year on the right foot.

“If we give them that type of encouragement, they’re going to want to continue to work out with us,” Leon said.

“Whether they see a difference on the scale or not, it’s the fact that they feel better.”
