KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) In this week's Central Texas Heroes we're introducing you to a young man from Killeen serving aboard one of the Navy's most valuable warships.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Malcolm Mason
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Malcolm Mason is serving aboard the U.S.S. George Washington.
The 2014 Shoemaker High School grad serves as a quartermaster.
That means his job includes navigating and piloting the ship and hoisting signal flags on the mast of the George Washington.
The air craft carrier is currently dry-docked in Newport News, Virginia as it undergoes some upgrades and refueling to its nuclear reactors.
In 2021 it will head back to Yokosuka, Japan.
"I definitely learned the values of discipline, good communication, and patience from Killeen," Mason said, "serving in the Navy brings great tradition and gives me a great sense of pride in giving back to my country. I'm glad I'm showing my parents that the time they put into me wasn't wasted."
The U.S.S. George Washington can transport more than 70 warplanes and 5,000 sailors anywhere in the world.
The ship's motto is "The Spirit of Freedom."
