MILANO, Texas (KWTX) A Central Texas man died at the scene after an 18-wheeler struck his pickup truck as he tried to turn across an area highway from the shoulder of the road, the Department of Public Safety said.

Louis Smith, 77, of Caldwell, was driving a 2006 Dodge pickup south at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on State Highway 36 about 3.5 miles south of Milano when he slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder of the highway, the DPS said.

As he attempted to turn left onto the highway from the shoulder, he pulled into the path of a southbound 18-wheeler, which struck the driver’s side of the pickup, the DPS said.

A passenger in the pickup, Louis Smith, Jr., 46, of Caldwell, was seriously injured.

He was taken to CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital with what the DPS described as incapacitating injuries.

The 26-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler wasn’t hurt.
