MCGREGOR, Texas (KWTX) Services have been scheduled for McGregor High School junior Cordelia Sloan, 16, who died in a weekend crash in Coryell County.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon next Monday at the Exchange Event Center at 300 South Jefferson Ave. in McGregor
The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Monday.
Sloan was a cheerleader, a member of PALs, the school's Interact Club and a student athlete.
She was crowned Miss McGregor Teen in September 2019.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Sloan family today, the ISD, our students, teachers, our citizens, our church families, our businesses and our organizations who are all impacted by the loss of one of our own bright star,” the McGregor Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture said in a Facebook post Monday.
The accident happened Sunday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 and County Road 185 two miles west of Oglesby, the Department of Public said in a press release Monday afternoon in which the victim was not identified by name.
The 16-year-old McGregor girl was driving south on CR 185 in a Chevrolet sedan when she ran a stop sign.
The car crashed into a pickup that was westbound on Highway 84, the DPS said.
Sloan died at the scene.
The driver of the pickup, whose name was not released, was taken to Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, the DPS said.
The accident is under investigation.
Staff counselors, representatives of the McGregor Ministerial Alliance and the Regional 12 Education Service Center Crisis Response Team were on the school’s campus Tuesday when classes resumed.
“The McGregor ISD family is saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of Cordelia Sloan,” Superintendent James Lenamon said in a statement Monday afternoon
“Cordelia always had a smile on her face; she will be greatly missed,” he said.
“We offer our condolences to the Sloan family.”
Sloan’s father, Terry, is president of the McGregor Rotary Club.
Rotary District Gov. Jim Henry issued a statement Tuesday expressing sympathy.
“Our hearts are broken for the Sloan family and our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Terry and his wife Carrie in their time of loss. Please keep the Sloan family in your thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time,” he said.
