KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) A Copperas Cove veterans’ group that annually donates turkeys and bags of other foods to needy families at holiday time last week presented 300 birds to two local school districts to be donated to families in need.

Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans last week gave the Killeen Independent School District and Copperas Cove Independent School District 150 turkeys each, and from there the birds and food made their way to families in those communities.

“From there we picked everything up and took it to our administration building,” Taina Maya, KISD’s spokeswoman, said.

She said the response from families in need was immediate and amazing.

“They drove, some got a ride, and many people walked,” Maya said.

“Principals came to pick some up to be delivered and we stored as many as we could to make sure all 150 went to KISD families or low income employees,” she said.

Several private donors helped raise money to buy all of the supplies, Maya said.

The response from those who received the gifts was immediate, as well: “They were so loving and grateful for the donation.

“What some may see as a small gesture truly makes the holiday brighter for others.

“It was a great experience to be a part of,” Maya said.
