COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) The Copperas Cove Animal Shelter and Pet Supplies Plus are hosting a free adoption event that started Thursday.

The public is welcome to come adopt for free from 9a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The shelter is at 1601 North 1st Street/North FM 116.

Otherwise known as “The 12 Strays of Christmas,” members of all Central Texas communities can help make sure these animals have a loving home this holiday season.

The shelter only requests that the animals go to a responsible, caring home.

“Nobody wants to be in a shelter,” said Senior Animal Control Officer David Wellington.

“So we’d like to get these animals out to a good loving home so they don’t have to spend Christmas and everything in the shelter. But what we do ask is not to get them as a present because a lot of these animals come back after Christmas.”

Any family that adopts an animal will also receive a free gift bag full of food and goodies for their new pet.

While the adoption is free, there are spay, neuter and vaccination contracts required with a $20 microchipping fee.
