Coryell County: Sheriff’s office warns of scammer using deputy’s name

GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) The Coryell County Sheriff’s Office warned Tuesday of scammers who are not only using the office’s name when calling people but also the name of a real sheriff’s lieutenant.

Chief Deputy Mark Wilcox said the numbers are popping up on people’s phone with 806 area code.

The scammers are claiming the people not only have warrants out for their arrest in Coryell County but also in other counties.

People were being asked to go by gift cards and to call them back and tell them the card numbers.

Then as “proof of payment,” the scammers tell people to mail the gift card to the county clerk's office.

Wilcox said it is against department policy to even discuss warrants over the phone, so people will need to go in person to get information.

He is also asking anyone who might be a victim to give them a call so they add it to their investigation.

The number is 254-865-7201.
