Copperas Cove: Fallen soldiers honored in local wreath-laying ceremony

COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) In honoring the men and women who paid the ultimate price, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in Copperas Cove.

The Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans building.

“Pay tribute to all the people who made the ultimate sacrifice," said president Jonathan Haywood.

During the ceremony, wreaths were laid outside the building -- a moving tribute to the men and women who gave their all.

"I just thank God for all our soldiers that protect us and are here for us. We thank God for our son serving and miss him dearly," Wayne Rourke said.

For Eddie Perkins, protecting the country is his family's DNA. Both of his grandfathers served and his father served in the Air Force for 21 years. Perkins served 26 years in the Army.

"I do have close friends that have lost (someone). I feel their pain because we all wear the boots but sometimes when you have somebody specifically that lost somebody personally to them while they were doing what they were supposed to do...can't put into words," Perkins said.

Several community leaders were also at the ceremony.
