Driver killed in fiery I-35 crash identified

HEWITT, Texas (KWTX) - Authorities have identified a truck driver who was killed in a fiery 18-wheeler crash early Tuesday on Interstate 35 that closed down southbound lanes for hours as Thomas Schultz, 63, of Hutchins.

He died at the scene of the accident, which happened at around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday under the Sun Valley Boulevard Bridge near mile marker 328.

Schultz lost control of his Freightliner semi-trailer, which, left the road and overturned, the Department of Public Safety said.

Flames engulfed the cab.

Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:30 am. Tuesday.

More than eight hours after the deadly crash, the southbound lanes remained closed as authorities investigated the accident.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the burned rig was moved off the highway and a cleanup of spilled oil and diesel fuel was underway.

The scene was cleared just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Texas Department of Transportation advised motorists to expect delays of 15 minutes or longer.
