SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KWTX) A fiery crash Wednesday involving 30 to 40 vehicles shut down a stretch of Interstate 37 south of San Antonio in Atascosa County.
No fatalities have been reported, but at least two people who were initially reported to have suffered serious injuries were taken to hospitals.
Department of Public Safety Lt. Jason Reyes later said their injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Fog early Wednesday morning may have played a role in the series of crashes in which some vehicles caught on fire, authorities said.
The chain-reaction crash involving 18-wheelers and passenger vehicles happened at around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday in the northbound and southbound lanes of I-37, KENS-TV in San Antonio reported.
"As our units were responding multiple calls came in regarding additional crashes,” Reyes said.
Both sides of the highway between FM 1009 and FM 99 were closed to traffic for several hours after the pileup, but have since been reopened.
