Former mayor out on bond after arrest for child sexual assault

VALLEY MILLS, Texas (KWTX) A former Central Texas mayor who has was hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound has been arrested.

Rodney Burl Nichols, 81, the former mayor of Valley Mills was booked into the Bosque County Jail on a warrant charging sexual abuse of a child this week, according to a jail official.

The charge is punishable by a minimum of 25 years in prison.

A spokesperson for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest confirmed on Tuesday that Nichols was no longer listed as a patient.

Nichols was released from the hospital and transported by Valley Mills police to the Bosque County Jail, an officer with the department.

Nichols was served the warrant when he was released from the Waco hospital.

Nichols posted a $50,000 bond and was released from the jail Wednesday afternoon.
