Hundreds remember Temple shooting victims at funeral service

COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) From the tears to the sharing of memories, hundreds gathered Saturday to remember the life of a grandmother and mother who were gunned down last week in Temple.

For nearly two hours, family and friends celebrated the life of Sherry Gray and her daughter, Shelly. Police say Shelly's estranged husband, Matthew Splittgerber, was responsible for the horrific crime. He's also accused of shooting her 4-year-old son, Corden Fidler.

During the funeral service at Copperas Cove High School, it was all about remembering the loving people they both were. Gray was a teacher for more than 30 years, including with Copperas Cove Independent School District. Shelly was a physical education teacher for Belton Independent School District.

"I encourage everyone to reach for your good memories. Sherry's smile, her laugh and her kindness," Marie Hammond said to the congregation.

Laughter came when intimate moments were shared, particularly how Sherry -- maiden name Smith -- first met her husband, Bob Gray. Others shared how the mother and daughter loved each other.

"Shelly was a great mother because she had a mother model in Sherry to top it all. Sherry advocated for all kids, all the time," Cristine Ragland said.

The family is also asking for continued prayers for Corden. He is still at McLane Children's Hospital in Temple, fighting for his life.
