(KWTX) Across Central Texas, dozens honored Ahmaud Arbery with a 2.23 mile run or walk.

Central Texans run in honor of Ahmaud Arbery.

Arbery was shot and killed on Feb. 23 just outside Brunswick, Ga. Friday would have been his 26th birthday.

For those choosing to either run or walk, they were also asked to post an image on social media with the hashtag #IRunWithMaud.

"We as parents, I think its us the hardest because if it was our son, our daughter," said Carla Fears.

Fears was part of a group at Killeen's Lions Club Park organized by Cioni Williams.

"We were talking earlier, 'Well you don't know him.' But we do know him because every time it happens, it happens to us. It happens to us," Fears added.

In Marlin, a group gathered for morning walk/run of 2.23 miles. The group, organized by Claretta Manigo, started at the Falconer Park at 7 a.m. They met again at 7 p.m. with more participants.

"We did this to support the ongoing fight for justice as we recognize the fact that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. We also wanted to celebrate the life of a young man, on his birthday, that was taken in such a violent way," Manigo said.

Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis McMichael, 34 have been charged with murder and aggravated assault.
