KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Killeen police Friday released figures from the department's 2019 Uniform Crime Report that show a 3% increase in the city’s crime rate, mostly because of an increase in auto thefts, which were up from 249 in 2018 to 318 in 2019.

Theft reports increased from 2,233 in 2018 to 2,296; burglary reports decreased from 854 to 818; aggravated assaults increased from 307 to 340; robberies decreased from 146 to 124 and rapes decreased from 117 to 105.

Murders rose from seven in 2018 to 16 in 2019.

“We continue to encourage citizens to practice basic crime prevention techniques, unfortunately many citizens still leave their keys in their cars, leave them unlocked as well as leaving valuables in plain view,” police Chief Charles Kimble said.
