Jim Januska, an East Coast native who learned to cook with his family, served in the Army for more than 20 years and deployed three times to Iraq and Afghanistan.

He didn’t have to think too hard about what to do after leaving the Army.

Januska’s wife, Sara, says her husband always had a special gift when it comes to food.

“He knows how to put flavors together,” she said,

“But he’s never had any kind of training. He just knows how to make really good food.

The couple opened Bite the Bagel in Harker Heights and Village Pizza in Killeen.

And every Veterans Day since the restaurants opened, Januska has given his fellow veterans a free bagel or a slice of pizza on the house.

“This is just something small that I think we can do and put a smile on people’s faces,” he said.
