KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Hundreds of volunteers helped put together 10,000 holiday wreaths at the Killeen Special Events Center on Saturday.

Hundreds help put together holiday wreaths at the Killeen Special Events Center.

From scouts and adults to high school students, everyone gave a helping hand so that the graves of the soldiers at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery are decorated for the holidays.

“We have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas and to live in a free country because of our veterans,” said Jean Shine. “If it wasn’t for them and their families who served, we wouldn’t be here today.”

This event has become a tradition ever since the Shine family started it back in 2006.

The wreaths will be placed on the graves next Saturday at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Shine says that she’s proud the community continues remember the fallen, especially around the holidays.

“It just warms your heart every year!” she said.

If you’re interested in laying the wreaths down next Saturday, note that parking will be limited at the cemetery as police advise visitors to not park next to the highway.

There will be buses to escort volunteers from the parking lot at Texas A&M Central Texas.
