KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) The Killeen City Council has approved proposed improvements to Lions Club Park at 1700 East Stan Schlueter Loop.

The council approved one proposal to spend $480,000 to replace the metal halide bulbs with LED lights on the baseball and softball fields.

The LED lights have a lifespan of 10 years compared to two years for the existing lights and will reduce energy and maintenance costs by more than 40%, officials said.

City Councilman Shirley Fleming said that while she’s happy with the improvement of the lights on the baseball fields, she believes the rest of the lights in the park should also be replaced with LEDs.

The council also approved a five-year plan with a $309,230 price tag to replace heating and air conditioning units at the Family Recreation Center.

The funds for the replacement will be budgeted in the Capital Improvements plan.
