Killeen: Wife of shooting suspect claims he was protecting her

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) The wife of a man accused of shooting another man last month in Killeen is coming to his defense.

The wife of a man accused of shooting another man last month is coming to his defense.

“The whole situation was just really scary,” she said.

Jeffrie Sterling Lane Jr. is accused of shooting a man in the 2300 block of Andover Drive on Dec. 27.

Lane Jr.’s wife, who did not want to be shown on camera, says he was only defending her.

"It was this gentleman and he started attacking me and he threatened to rape me,” she said.

That gentleman, she says, was a friend of Lane Jr. She says the friend walked inside their unlocked home after Lane Jr. left.

She claims Lane Jr. caught the man in the act and then grabbed her gun.

"I even tried to stop him; I said 'please let's just contact the police,’” she said.

Instead, Lane Jr. is accused of shooting the man – who has not been identified. After an hours-long search that caused several streets to be closed, SWAT officers were unable to locate Lane Jr. after searching a home.

The person Lane Jr. is accused of shooting was found on Botanical Drive – a street over.

Lane Jr.’s wife maintains he shot the man in self-defense. But if he was innocent, why did they flee to Austin?

"We panicked. Like, I panicked. I didn't even realize this person had got shot until we went outside and I seen baseball cap and blood on the pavement,” she said.

Lane Jr.’s wife says she has filed charges against her husband's friend.

“I just want my husband home, he was just defending me…defending our home. This person threatened to come back and kill me and our children. It’s just terrifying. And, this person is now out of the hospital and has been reportedly over at the apartment complex looking for me," she said.

As of Thursday night, Killeen police said they have no updates in the case.

Lane Jr. is in the Bell County Jail on a $200,000 bond for the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.
