LAMPASAS, Texas (KWTX) The Lampasas Fire Department honored a volunteer Wednesday who’s spent the last seven decades helping fight fires.
Donald "Duck" Rathmanm, 86, joined the team when he was just 16.
He says his father and grandfather were also firefighters.
For several years "Duck" worked as a firefighter on Fort Hood, too.
On Wednesday he reminisced about a close call he and the fire chief had while battling a grass fire.
"That fire was about to get us," he said.
"It was moving pretty fast, and we were both about give out, couldn't run anymore, and he came and pulled right in front of us, and we got on the truck and got out of there," he said, laughing.
“Duck” received a certificate Wednesday from the city’s mayor and a flag from U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin.
He says he plans to continue volunteering as long as he can.
