The city says that organizers from the kitchen reached out to the them with plans to begin preparing food on-site, which was something they had not previously done.

In order to do this the kitchen needed to bring their building up to code.

"They do a lot of wonders for a lot of people here in Lampasas," says June Ellenburg who along with her husband, eats at the soup kitchen every week.

The nonprofit says it served 50 to 60 people three times a week, and would need to make the upgrades to keep up.

The soup kitchen offered free meals for homeless, the poor, and anyone in need.

"Everyone is welcome, it doesn't matter what they have been through in life or where they are at in life," says volunteer Lisa Love.

The kitchen voluntarily closed its doors on Jan. 21 as they prepare to make about $40,000 worth of upgrades.

Currently the kitchen says it is still $12,000 short of that need.

Organizers are hoping to re-open by April if they can get the funds.

"We want to get these renovations done as soon as possible and get it back open as soon as possible so we can get our family back together," says Pastor Joe Dauben who helps run the soup kitchen.
