WACO, Texas (KWTX) The Texas Department of Transportation is planning lane and ramp closures starting next week as construction begins on the I-35 Waco project from South 12th Street to N orth Loop 340.

Beginning, Monday, northbound I-35 mainlanes will be reduced to two lanes from 12th Street to Loop 340 to allow for pavement rehabilitation along the shoulder and the inside lane.

To fully put the closure in place, crews will intermittently close various sections of the mainlanes and shoulder Sunday through Tuesday night.

Additionally, beginning Monday, various short and long-term lane closures will be in place along the southbound frontage road between 12th Street and Loop 340 as crews begin construction activities.

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers and the Texas Department of Transportation asks motorists to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

On Wednesday, TxDOT will permanently close the southbound exit ramp for 4th and 5th Streets to downtown (Exit 335A).

Drivers wishing to access downtown will need to use the University Parks Drive exit (335B).

Crews will also close the northbound I-35 entrance ramp near McLane Stadium and drivers should access I-35 at the next entrance ramp just north of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

This entrance ramp is expected to be closed for the duration of construction to keep crews and the traveling public safe during work.

Also beginning Wednesday, crews will permanently close the direct access to the southbound frontage road at South 16th Street, South 15th Street/Baylor Avenue, and South 13th Street/Connor Avenue.

These closures are part of TxDOT's efforts to improve safety along the frontage roads by consolidating access points.

TxDOT will also permanently close the two direct access ramps at the I-35 and US 77 Business interchange in May.

Drivers exiting for US 77 Business from I-35 or entering I-35 from US Business 77, from any direction will use the existing ground level interchange access points.

Permanent ramp closures are part of a major reconfiguration of entrance and exit ramps throughout the corridor to improve safety and mobility.

In mid-May, TxDOT will permanently close and demolish the pedestrian bridge over I-35 near South 8th Street to allow for construction activities along the I-35 mainlanes.

Pedestrians wishing to cross I-35 should use the existing pedestrian connection at 4th and 5th Streets.

Additional information on timing of construction activities will be provided to the public as activities approach.

All dates are subject to change dependent on weather and field conditions.

The I-35 Waco project will improve safety and mobility throughout the I-35 corridor.

Improvements include widening the mainlanes to four lanes in each direction, reconfiguring ramps, reconstructing bridges and improving interchanges, adding U-turns at cross streets, and improving access for bicycles and pedestrians.

The eight-mile, $341 million project is expected to be complete in late 2023.
