BELTON, Texas (KWTX) A local high school cheer squad is bringing home some big time hardware after winning a national competition which consisted of more than 200 schools.
The Belton High school squad won first place over the weekend at the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star Nationals high school competition in Dallas.
The girls placed first in the Large Intermediate Coed category as well as in Superior Showmanship at the event. T
he squad will also be receiving a Grand Champion banner for being the highest scoring intermediate team of all that competed.
“We are incredibly proud of how they were able to work together, lean on each other, and use all their collective talent and skills to win nationals,” said cheer coach Ginger Elliot.
The squad, which competed in a preliminary round Saturday and in the finals Sunday, consists of freshman through seniors at Belton High School and is made up of 29 students, including 28 girls and one boy.
The team received a bid while attending the NCA camp last July.
“I think it was an honor to be their coach. Our students have amazing talent, and they put in a lot of hard work to compete at this level,” Elliot said.
This is the first time the squad from Belton has competed at the NCA Nationals.
