COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) The Copperas Cove Fire Department’s paramedics may have to use the department’s self-contained breathing apparatus or air packs as protection against COVID-19 if the department runs out of healthcare supplies already in short supply.

“These devices provide positive-pressure breathing air for the responder, while at the same time, providing an element of personal protection from the spread of COVID-19,” Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young said in a press release Thursday.

“In the near future, it will not be unreasonable to see a Paramedic in one of these air packs come to your door if you call 911. Don’t be scared, don’t worry,” he said.

The air packs have microphones and speakers that would be used if a paramedic is wearing one.
