KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) One year after the death of her son, a local mother is hoping someone that knows what happened comes forward to help solve the case.

“We know that my son was murdered…it’s not even a question to it," said Renee Michaels.

Her son, Yorrick Michaels-Toms, was found shot to death on Dec. 20, 2018, at an apartment complex off Westcliff Road in Killeen.

At the time, police said they were called to an apartment in reference to a burglary call.

A year, she says, someone knows what happened and should contact the Killeen Police Department.

“People won’t speak to the police but they speak to me. They speak around and because of that not even a year later another man is dead because of these same people. It bothers me," she said.

Michaels believes her son was set up and murdered.

“Still here we are a year later and no real answers to his death, so it makes it hard," she said. "What’s if it’s your child, what if it’s your grandchild? What if it’s your close friend or family member, what if it’s you?”

With the ups and downs of the past year, Michaels carries the memory of her son with his ashes in a heart urn necklace.

Last Friday, family and friends came together to remember Michaels-Toms with a balloon release.

"When will people speak up?" she asked.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Killeen Police Department.
