Local officer injured in crash on I-35

BELTON, Texas (KWTX) A Belton police officer was taken to a local hospital Wednesday morning along with the driver of a vehicle that struck his patrol unit on Interstate 35.

The chain reaction crash happened at around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday when the driver of a southbound Toyota Camry fell asleep at the wheel, authorities said.

The Camry clipped a Nissan SUV, which then struck the patrol unit as the officer monitored traffic near a ramp in the 200 block of I-35.

The officer and the driver of the Nissan were both taken to Scott & White Medical Center in Temple.

The officer was alert and able to walk on his own, authorities said.

Information about the driver’s injuries wasn’t immediately available.

No names were released.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
