Local veterans work to preserve the dignity of Old Glory

Local men and women who've served are doing their part to protect the sanctity of the American flag.

American Legion Post 223 in Killeen is planning a ceremony for this spring, but they're asking for the public's help now as they prepare for it.

Many Central Texas homes and businesses have flags outdoors that get tattered and worn by the elements.

The veterans are asking you to bring your flags by the post to they can dispose of them the proper way.

The post is located at 208 South Park Street in Killeen.

And on June 14 they'll hold the ceremony at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

This is one service project in a multitude of others performed by the veterans who are part of the legion.

Many are motorcycle riders participating in events to collect toys, raise money for child abuse prevention, and raise awareness about safety on the road.

If you'd like to drop off your flag American Legion Post 223 is open from noon until 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, with extended hours Thursday through Saturday.
