GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) Christwell Lowell Mathes, Jr., 23, of Copperas Cove, who was charged in September 2017 in connection with the theft of 26 guns from a Copperas Cove pawnshop, was sentenced to eight years in prison Monday after deciding to plead guilty as his jury trial got underway in Gatesville.
Mathes pleaded guilty to burglary of a building and to enhancements that boosted the offense from a state jail felony to a third-degree felony, prosecutors said.
The 26 firearms were stolen during a break-in just after 10 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2017 at Kwik Cash Pawn at 401 West Business Highway 190.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the National Shooting Sports Foundation had offered a combined reward totaling as much as $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.
Police didn’t say at the time of Mathes’ arrest whether anyone would receive the reward.
The stolen firearms haven’t been recovered.
