Darcy L. Matthews of Belton died in a fiery plane crash shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

She was the passenger.

The pilot was identified as Jonathan J. Vannatta of Maumelle, Ark.

The highway patrol report says the plane took off and then began to fall straight down, crashing into a field a short distant to the east of the runway where it burst into flames.

Both the pilot and the passenger were found dead inside the wreckage.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the single-engine Mooney M20S crashed “under unknown circumstances” shortly after departing from the airport.

The plane was registered with the FAA to Marvin Vannatta out of Shelbyville, Tenn.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the crash is still under investigation.

The federal agency says they will have a preliminary report available sometime in the next few weeks.

A full report could take 18 to 24 months.
