Several holiday events lined up to honor local veterans in December

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System has several events coming up throughout the month of December to honor veterans and bring them a little holiday cheer.

On December 8 at the Doris Miller VA, residents and patients are invited to enjoy a viewing of the Army Navy game.

A gift shop starts this week allowing residents and patients to pick out gifts for their loved ones for Christmas.

The American Legion women raised money for the gifts so they'll be free for the patients.

The volunteers will also wrap and ship the gifts if necessary at no cost to veterans.

And later in the month, Voluntary Services will be providing gifts to all the patients.

If you'd like to volunteer with the VA, call 1-800-423-2111.

On Friday, Dec. 14 at the Temple VA there will be a holiday safety event, and all veterans and their families are invited.

People can enjoy cookies and other refreshments, and get some valuable information on everything from holiday decoration safety to risks for children to mental health awareness.

That lasts from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

And VA officials also remind people battling mental health and emotional challenges to call the Veterans Crisis Line a 1-800-273-8255, press 1.
