The family first made an effort to brighten officers working on Christmas Eve, by tracking them down and giving them homemade ornaments.

Their experience was so positive they decided to go out again a few weeks later to deliver thank you cards on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Thursday.

Johnson says the criticism against the Temple Police Department fueled their kind gestures, hoping to let the officers know there are people in the community who support the department.

"What they do every day, they put their lives on the line for our safety," Chris Johnson said.

The officers they ran into were surprised, but grateful.

"I'm speechless, but it’s great to get feedback for the job that we do. Sometimes it’s a thankless job but it’s a necessary job" Officer James Lewis said.
