TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) While many students have vacation on their minds, four Texas State Technical College spent the better part of two days giving.
The building construction technology majors spent several hours Thursday and Friday volunteering at the Word of Faith Ministry in Temple.
The students are part of the SkillsUSA Teamworks team, which will be competing this season.
Starting Thursday the four worked on closing in a hallway, breaking down a wall, installing a French door and doing other renovation work at the church.
For the leader of the team, Andres Zapata, committing his time was a no-brainer.
“We learn this trade and I actually want to use it and help out others and do the best of both worlds. You are learning the trades at TSTC and let’s use it to help out the community because there are not that many people out there willing to do it,” he said.
It was a partnership between the church and students after the team captain agreed if the church bought the materials, the team would do the work for free and volunteer their time.
