The purchase was made thanks to a grant from state farm the department received at a city council meeting in May.

Wednesday the department trained on quick turns in the boat, and rescuing swimmers at Cedar Ridge Park.

Officials say the boat will be a huge help, not just keeping the community safe, but to also protect the swift water technicians, allowing them to make rescues without getting in the water.

“When we can go in a raft or boat it's a lot safer because we’re on top of the water and we can have more control with the motor. Training Chief Jonathan Christian said Wednesday.

“We can actually go up the river and we don't have to rely on going down the river in going with the flow of the water."

Christian says having the boat will help with mutual aid in surrounding communities, as well as return the favor for the departments that helped when Temple residents were in need.
