Bishop Holcomb, the founder of Christian House of Prayer ministries, died Tuesday at the age of 66.

His wife, Pastor Valerie Holcomb, delivered a message to the congregation Sunday -- the first without her husband.

"Thank you, thank you for all the texts, the kindness and love you sent to my family," she said.

During her message, Valerie Holcomb also revealed that the well-known bishop had been sick. Around Thanksgiving, his health took a turn.

"I've cried so much, God got to give me more tears," she said.

A testament to the man that Bishop Holcomb was, those who knew him described him as a great man and a father-figure.

"Coming here from the military, he took me under his wings," Della Perry said.

Valerie Holcomb also offered encouragement to the congregation.

"I want to encourage you. Bishop was a man, kind of man that only come along every now and then," she said.

A viewing service for Bishop Nathaniel Holcomb is on Wednesday. A funeral service is set for 11 a.m. Thursday.
