Toys R Us to shutter as many as 180 stores including some in Texas

NEW YORK (AP) Toys R Us, squeezed by and huge chains like Walmart, will begin closing about 20 percent of its stores starting in February including some in Texas.

As many as 182 could be closed.

The chain’s stores in Killeen and Waco are apparently not on the chopping block, however.

Toys R Us plans to close stores in West El Paso, Katy, Allen Irving, Lewisville, Dallas, Hurst and Fort Worth.

Hobbled by $5 billion in debt, the company that once dominated toy sales in the U.S. filed for bankruptcy protection in September.

Chairman and CEO Dave Brandon said in a letter Wednesday that tough decisions are required to save Toys R Us.

Brandon said that the majority the targeted stores will be closed by mid-April and that there will be deep discounts at those locations.

Toys R Us is based in Wayne, N.J.
