Veteran who shot down last Japanese fighter pilot of WWII is laid to rest

CENTERVILLE, Texas (KWTX) Over the weekend loved ones said goodbye to a World War II veteran who played a critical role in bringing an end to the war.

WWII veteran F.L. "Louie" Thompson, Jr.

F.L. "Louie" Thompson, Junior of Centerville was a pilot who trained in the Navy and was transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps.

He went by the code name Topaz and flew 30 different planes on multiple missions.

But while he's modest the honor he's most proud of took place on June 22, 1945 when he shot down the last Japanese fighter pilot of World War II

He was called to action again during the Korean War spending a total of seven years serving our country.

And Thompson said he would do it all over again.

His funeral took place Saturday at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
