Mexia cat rescue in need of foster homes
The Kittery is seeing a decrease in volunteers to foster cats, putting strain on the rescue organization.
MEXIA, Texas (KWTX) - The Mexia cat rescue, The Kittery, needs people to foster cats following a decrease in community participation.
The Kittery is owned and operated by Elizabeth Hernandez, with help from her husband. The rescue operates out of a shed in their front yard where kittens are housed.
“That’s what drives me, you know?” Hernandez said. “It’s really nothing other than the passion for these animals. They don’t have a voice. We are their voice.”
Hernandez started fostering cats for another cat rescue. That’s when she and her husband decided to do more.
“It was heartbreaking that there were so many that have a need,” Hernandez
To the best of their ability, the Kittery accepts kittens from anyone who can’t care for them.
The rescue either houses them or sends them to foster homes until the kittens receive all their vaccinations. In some instances, they will provide transport and pay the vet bill. Finally, the kittens get sent to retailers that partner with the rescue to be adopted.
“We will come up with the funds,” Hernandez said. “We will come up with the transport. We will come up to the means to get your kitties into great homes by us having partnerships.”
The Kittery can’t accept kittens while at maximum capacity. That’s why it desperately needs foster homes to ease the strain on the facility’s limited resources.
“We need adoptions so I can accept more kittens,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said if the The Kittery can find more foster homes, its can continue to help cats in Central Texas.
“It’ll be bright if we can get community support,” Hernandez said.
