WACO, Texas (KWTX) - After seeing firsthand the devastation in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, a Central Texas native decided to move him and his family there to continue helping with recovery efforts.

In the weeks after Hurricane Helene Caleb Fisher, along with his father and a friend, drove up to North Carolina to help people there pick up the pieces. But the second they left, Fisher says he knew he had to go back.

“We were only here, I think it was five days, and I just had that same crazy burning urge to come back and help as much as we could, and the good lord’s blessed us with the opportunity to be able to,” he shared.

And so, he, his wife and their four kids loaded up into their camper and made the trip to North Carolina.

When they arrived there earlier this week, they immediately got to work, volunteering with the Red Truck Men.

“We’ve done from tree trimming, putting tarps on houses, pulled a car that had been washed up on a bank, we pulled it off the bank and got it back… just a variety of things,” Fisher explained.

He shared that many areas are still completely devastated. “Major bridges washed out, major roads are washed out, houses are still stuffed up in balls and trees, there’s still vehicles strewn everywhere you would never think to see a vehicle,” he said.

But what’s most concerning is the hundreds of thousands of people who are still without homes.

According to Fisher, “with the cold coming their money on staying in a hotel is running out so we’re running around trying to help temporarily fix their houses and tarp their houses and… a lot of people are still without power.”

And while they’ve been doing the best they can, he says they are in need of more propane, heavy equipment, and above all volunteers.

“There’s been steady about 10 of us,” Fisher said. “The work orders are still coming in and I mean some of these, they asked a month ago for help and we’re just now able to get to them.”

But people can also help by making donations to the Red Truck Men. As for Fisher, he’s hoping to stay and keep helping as long as he’s able.

“Just us coming in and helping them stack firewood or delivering two bottles of propane or ten gallons of gas, and you see this amazing beautiful smile that you don’t think they’ve seen in two months, you know it’s just phenomenal,” he shared.
