GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) - On August 2, 1870, Gatesville was incorporated as a city.

Gatesville, the county seat, grew up around Fort Gates, established in 1849 to protect settlers from Indians.

In 2001, Gatesville was officially designated as the Spur Capital of Texas.

This was in recognition of the donation of the largest collection of spurs in the world by the family of Coach Lloyd Mitchell to the Coryell Museum and Historical Association.

The collection houses over 10,000 spurs and represents 77 years of collecting.

It includes riding spurs of Pancho Villa, Rex Bell, and Jackie Kennedy.
