COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) Fried chicken, sweet tea and reading are going hand in hand at one Central Texas school.
The students at Martin Walker Elementary School in Copperas Cove are being rewarded for reading.
In partnership with Bush’s Chicken, the kids will receive a chicken dinner if they meet certain criteria.
The program is part of the Books and Beyond Reading incentive program for students in grades K-2.
The students receive the free meal if they read the required Bluebonnet books, vote in the state program and for complete seasonal reading challenges.
The fried chicken fast-food restaurant said it is piloting the program through Martin Walker and if it is successful, it will be offered to additional CCISD schools next year.
More than 100 coupons have been awarded to date.
“Since Bush’s is a community business, we want to do whatever we can to encourage students and their families to read since reading is a skill that will make students successful in school and beyond,” local Bush’s spokeswoman Krissy Wagner said.
