KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Thirty students at East Ward Elementary School in Killeen got new bicycles and helmets Friday afternoon, just in time for Christmas.

“I want to play with it and share it with my brothers,” student, Darrell Colgan said.

Colgan and 29 classmates got the free bikes through Academy Sports + Outdoors annual bike donation program.

“We gave away bikes to students that have perfect attendance, which means they have never been absent, never been checked out and are here every day from start to finish,” counselor Nancy Brown said.

“We also gave bikes to students who have had good behavior,” she said.

Officers from the Killeen Police Department’s bike patrol unit provided the students with some safety tips.

In the past 16 years, Academy has given out more than 5,000 bikes to students across the country.
