‘It just has value to me and my boyfriend’: Box with dog ashes stolen from Waco woman’s car

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A Waco woman is desperately trying to find her boyfriend’s dog’s ashes. Someone recently stole them from her car that was parked at her apartment complex, Rivercrest Apartments, just across from the Ferrell Center.

Alexandria Mendoza’s boyfriend owned the black lab named Candy. Mendoza believes a thief stole Candy’s ashes because they thought it was a jewelry box.

On March 5 she was going back and forth from her apartment to her parked car to help her boyfriend move when someone broke into the unlocked vehicle.

“The car was completely wrecked, everything was completely thrown everywhere,” Mendoza said.

The thief stole an urn that had her boyfriend’s dog’s ashes in it, along with a pair of sunglasses.

“There was a computer monitor and like a box with a Nintendo Switch and other gaming stuff, just various stuff and they didn’t even touch it,” Mendoza said.

Candy passed away from bone cancer last May.

“Honestly, like the best dog ever, she never did anything bad, she was just a great dog,” Mendoza said.

She meant the world to her humans.

“When I met her I was in college and I was away from everyone I knew,” Mendoza said. “My boyfriend was going to a different school, so she was a big help with that.”

Mendoza remains hopeful that Candy’s urn will turn up.

“It doesn’t have any monetary value, it just has value to me and my boyfriend,” Mendoza said. “This was a loved member of my family and we just want her ashes back.”

The stolen urn is a wooden box with flowers on it and a gold nameplate that says “Candy.”

The Waco Police Department confirmed it is investigating this case. Anyone with information should reach out to the department.
