China Spring homeowners left with pricey repairs after tornado

CHINA SPRING, Texas (KWTX) - China Spring homeowners say Friday’s storm was unlike anything they’ve ever seen before and will cost a pretty penny. Some in Wortham Bend Estates, one of the neighborhoods hit the hardest, say the damages could cost them thousands of dollars.

On Saturday a crew patched up the Patrick family’s roof in Wortham Bend Estates, just a day after a tornado tore through China Spring.

”We’re in for a long road to recovery,” homeowner Katie Patrick said.

Six months ago Patrick moved into her home with her wife and two kids.

”I mean it’s heartbreaking to know that my daughter is probably going to be scared of storms from now on,” Patrick said.

The tornado left them with shattered windows, missing fencing and a broken roof.

“Our roof is actually separated from the walls of our home, so we can see daylight from the top,” Patrick said.

Just down the street at Bill Rader’s home tons of trees are knocked over and many roof shingles are missing.

”It was about 30 seconds of a storm and when we came out everything was just like this, all damaged,” Rader said. “I mean it didn’t take 30 seconds and it was over with.”

Thankfully, a good samaritan installed a tarp on his roof for free.

”In this day and age it’s really surprising,” Rader said. “I really do appreciate it.”

For the Patrick family, a different good samaritan stepped in to give them a cleanup kit, complete with heavy duty trash bags and paper towels.

”The community has just really come together and loved us,” Patrick said. “We have neighbors that we’ve never even met come and move trees off of cars and just help us clear debris.”

The Patrick family has set up this GoFundMe to assist them as they work on rebuilding.
