SEC Football Previews: Can the LSU Tigers' defense make strides?
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - LSU returns six starters on the nation’s top offense in scoring and yards last season, but will need the defense to level up to be successful. Here’s a short preview of the Tigers:
COACH — Brian Kelly: 304-104-2 overall (20-7 in two seasons at LSU).
2023 SEASON — 10-3 overall, 6-2 in SEC (T-2nd West); Won Reliaquest Bowl over Wisconsin.
RETURNING STARTERS — 13 (6 offensive, 6 defensive, 1 special teams).
TOP PLAYERS — QB Grant Nussmeier, WR Kyren Lacy, TE Mason Taylor, OT Will Campbell, LB Harold Perkins Jr., LB Greg Penn III, S Major Burns.
KEY LOSSES — QB Jayden Daniels, WR Malik Nabers, C Charles Turner, DT Maason Smith, DT Jordan Jefferson, LB Omar Speights, FS Andre Sam.
SEASON OUTLOOK — Despite the Tigers’ high-octane offense, LSU’s defense finished the season ranked 105th in the country by allowing 416 yards per game. Passing defense was especially difficult, allowing 255.6 yards per game on average. The Tigers do return standout linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. who will bring experience and talent to the front end of the defense. On offense, LSU looks to junior Garrett Nussmeier to take over at quarterback, replacing 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.
