SEC Football Previews: Will Auburn Tigers’ new coordinators make the difference?

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - In his second season with the program, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has already flipped both his offensive and defensive coordinators.

Here is a short preview of the Tigers:

COACH — Hugh Freeze: 80-54 overall (6-7 in one season at Auburn).

2023 SEASON — 6-7 overall, 3-5 in SEC (5th West); Lost Music City Bowl to Maryland.

RUTURNING STARTERS — 14 (6 offensive, 6 defensive, 2 special teams).

TOP PLAYERS — QB Payton Thorne, RB Jarquez Hunter, WR Cam Coleman, C Connor Lew, DE Keldric Faulk, LB Eugene Asante, CB Keionte Scott.

KEY LOSSES — QB Robby AShford, WR Ja’Varrius Johnson, DT Marcus Harris, DT Justin Rogers, CB Nehemiah Pritchett, CB D.J. James, CB Jaylin Simpson.

SEASON OUTLOOK — Freeze added Ole Miss assistant Derrick Nix to coach an offense that ranked 71st in the nation in scoring with a 26.2 point average. Auburn nabbed wide receiver recruit Cam Coleman from the Aggies, who figures to factor into the Tiger offense from the opening game. Defensively, Auburn brought in former A&M defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, who orchestrated a top-40 all-around defense for the Aggies last year. SEC All-Freshman defensive end Keldric Faulk returns after recording 35 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss last season.
